Embracing the Journey of Leadership

At the tender age of six, growing up in Tunisia, I discovered the captivating power of idols. It was during those evenings, nestled beside my father, listening to the crackling waves of his transistor radio, that I first encountered the mesmerizing voice of Habib Bourguiba, the president of Tunisia at the time. Through his remarkable stories, he imparted timeless wisdom about responsibility, citizenship, education, collaboration, and integrity to a nation seeking its identity. As the flickering glow of our only oil lantern bathed us in its warmth, I soaked in every word, igniting an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.

One indelible story shared by my father transported me to a time of aerial battles and improbable heroism. He recounted a fateful day in 1943 or 1944 when he bore witness to a fierce duel between German and American fighter planes. Amidst the chaos, an American pilot, the underdog in this grand theater of war, was shot down and ejected from his aircraft. Compelled by compassion, my father embarked on a perilous mission, disguised the wounded pilot as a Bedouin woman, and outwitted a German platoon in a daring escape. Days later, that rescued pilot from the heartland of America found himself healed, joining an American battalion on their way to Tunis. It was a tale of courage, humanity, and the extraordinary bond forged between strangers.

Another fortuitous encounter unfolded in our humble village during the summer of 1975. A weathered American couple, their eyes filled with a poignant longing, sought out my father’s presence. Emotions swelled as the man embraced my father, rendering words unnecessary in that tender reunion. Eager to impress our unexpected guests, I eagerly repeated the only English phrase I knew at the time, “Ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” Little did I grasp the full context or significance of those words spoken by a man my father often spoke of with reverence—John Fitzgerald Kennedy. Three months later, a package arrived, a treasure trove of audio tapes containing the speeches of both John and Robert Kennedy. This unexpected gift would serve as the compass guiding my lifelong pursuit of leadership.

Over the years, I have traversed the globe, encountering countless leaders—some awe-inspiring, others falling short of their promise. Each encounter deepened my fascination with the enigmatic qualities that define true leadership. In my quest for understanding, I delved into the vast ocean of leadership literature, only to realize how much remained unexplored. It was against this backdrop that the pivotal question emerged—could I, with my humble beginnings, one day become a leader?

Growing up in a country where privilege and pedigree often determined one’s trajectory, I accepted my fate as an unlikely candidate for leadership. The mere thought of assuming such a mantle seemed far beyond the realm of possibility. But the world around me has undergone remarkable transformations since my encounters with those early idols. I have been blessed with the privilege of traversing continents, immersing myself in diverse cultures, and witnessing leadership in its multifaceted forms. This kaleidoscope of experiences ignited an unyielding desire to unravel the intricacies of leadership, prompting me to embark on a pilgrimage of knowledge at one of the world’s most esteemed universities.

Convinced that leadership is the fulcrum upon which success or failure pivots, I devoted years to exploring the mysteries that surround it. Through my professional and voluntary engagements, I have mentored, coached, and guided aspiring leaders from all walks of life. Their dreams—of entrepreneurship, political leadership, social activism, and professional excellence—were bold, yet often thwarted by daunting odds and insurmountable challenges. Witnessing their aspirations wither in the face of adversity propelled me to document their struggles, their triumphs, and the invaluable lessons learned along the way.

In the pages of this book, I share with you a tapestry woven from the threads of personal anecdotes, intimate encounters, and a deep understanding of the human spirit. Rooted in humility and an unwavering belief in the potential that lies dormant within each of us, these pages serve as an invitation to embark on a transformative journey of leadership exploration.
